More genealogy stuff:

Interment.net has transcriptions of headstones around the world. There are some Lancashire ones that might be relevant. Reading this makes me want to contribute by transcribing some nearby headstones -- especially since there is surprisingly little content for this area.

GENUKI, which is very helpful generally, has a searchable directory of churches that looks very helpful.

GENUKI also has a short page on the Osbaldeston family.

I tried just Googling one of the family surnames and "family history genealogy" and came across curiousfox.com, which looks intriguing and perhaps promising. We'll see!

I gave Mum (and myself!) some genealogy software and reading material for Christmas, in the hope that some genealogy work would be an interesting and fulfilling project. I have been doing some work on writing up what I already know, and I'm sad to observe the relatively easy things that I don't yet know.

All that being said, I'm going to start blogging (along with other things) some of the genealogy sites that may be of use to us. Here goes....

The UK government has an official site, familyrecords.gov.uk, which looks like an excellent and obvious starting point.

1837online sounds promising, too.

For Scotland, there's the official ScotlandsPeople site.

I got the three above links from this Ask MeFi thread.

Another Ask MeFi thread included a link to FamilySearch.org, a site provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

I found the official Canadian site, the Canadian Genealogy Centre, all by myself (with the help of Google, which can of course be another useful resource for this kind of research).

Now I need to try these out!

Broadwayworld.com has published some interesting photos from the NYMF gala. I actually went to this last year, when it was at China Club (my first time there). It was my first exposure to the Altar Boyz, who sang one of their ballads (the one about the cell phone).

And on a non-theatre note (!), Business Week has published a "Best of the New Web" list, which mentions several of my own personal favorites, including Ask MetaFilter (I hope that the article link lasts).

This is yet another item that I discovered on MetaFilter, (thread here): Canfranc.de a site about Europe's second-largest train section, which is derelict. I am absolutely fascinated by decaying public buildings (there are some really cool sites with photos of derelict malls on the web, too), and the photos here are beautiful. (Europe's largest train station is the one in Leipzig, which I visited and adored way back in 1992).

Note to self: if I ever have a big chunk of free time, I should try some of these things.

Personally, when I'm trying to take people to slightly out-of-the-way places, I like to go to Coney Island (I love the notion of a beach in the city -- and it's ever so vaguely reminiscent of Southport), the Schomburg Center, Chelsea Market, and SoHo. But just walking around the city is really fun too -- especially with good company.

There is now a blog for the new RENT movie! I am a very happy camper (actually, an excited camper, but that sounds wrong)!

The other night, we were walking through the East Village on one of the streets where the movie was apparently shot (according to the photos from the set that I saw online). That was exciting for me (perhaps a little too exciting).

Monday night (the 11th) I went to Rosie's Broadway Belters, a benefit at the Zipper Theatre. It was fabulous: amazing performers and performances plus a fun party. Great gift bags, too. Some of my favorite performers were there. There are some photos here.
